Helgeland & The Coastal Road

If you have time, take the slow road. Kystriksveien (Fv17) is often called the world's most beautiful coastal drive. It’s a journey of ferries, glaciers, and 20,000 islands.

Saltstraumen: The Maelstrom

🌀

Your journey starts just 30km from Bodø at Saltstraumen. This is the world's strongest tidal current. Every 6 hours, 400 million cubic meters of water rush through a narrow strait, creating massive whirlpools. Check the tide table and witness nature's raw power from the bridge.

Svartisen Glacier

❄️

Further south, you meet Svartisen, Norway's second-largest glacier. It sits so low you can almost touch it from the coast. Park the van at Holandsvika and take the shuttle boat across for a hike to the ice edge. It is a surreal experience of blue ice against green valleys.

The Ferries of Fv17

⛴️

This route requires patience. You will take multiple ferries. Embrace it. The ferries are where you eat waffles, drink coffee, and enjoy the view from the sea. It slows down time in the best way possible.
