Bodø is no longer just a gateway; it is the heartbeat of the North. As the 2024 European Capital of Culture, it offers a blend of hip urban energy and raw, untamed wilderness that most travelers miss in their rush to the islands.
Saunas & Harbor Vibes
Red Sands & Peaks
History Frozen in Time
Start your journey where the harbor meets the city. Bodø’s waterfront is alive with the "Hot & Cold" ritual. Jump into the salt water from the floating Pust or Fauna Saunas. Walk the iconic Moloen (breakwater) at sunset, or ascend to the Wood SPA Hotel for a panoramic recharge. For foodies, Bodø is a playground—visit hip spots like Lyst på or Tigerberget for world-class Arctic ingredients served with urban cool.
Drive North to Mjelle, the beach with the famous red "gemstone" sand. Hike up Mjelletinden for a view that encompasses the entire archipelago. Further north lies Kjerringøy, a perfectly preserved 19th-century trading post. It feels like walking into a fairytale—old wooden buildings, the smell of stockfish, and the quiet shadow of the mountains.
Cross the bridge to Sandhornøya. Here, the massive Sandhornet peak looms over Langsanden (Sandvikstranden), a 2km stretch of white sand that rivals any beach in the world. If you seek total immersion, drive to Steigen. It is a land of turquoise water and jagged alpine peaks—it is the local's best-kept secret and the ultimate destination for those who want Lofoten-level beauty without the crowds.
For raw hiking, the Heggmoen area offers deep valleys and high plateaus. Look across from Bodøsjøen to see the serrated teeth of Børvasstindan. These peaks, including the challenging Per Kalsatinden, are the true titans of the mainland. If you have kids, Bratten Aktivitetspark provides world-class coastal paths and outdoor climbing with a view.

Sept - April
May - July
Aug - Oct
The Season: September to April. The darker the night, the better the show.
How to Hunt: You need clear skies and solar activity. Use the 'Aurora' app to track the Kp-index. If it's above Kp3, get ready.
Best Spots: Gimsøy (Lofoten) and Mjelle (Bodø) are favorites because they face North with zero light pollution.
Van Life Perk: You don't need a tour bus. Park your van by a fjord, cook a warm dinner, and wait in comfort. When the sky explodes in green and purple, step outside with your cocoa.
The Season: Late May to Mid-July. The sun never dips below the horizon.
The Strategy: Flip your schedule. The "Golden Hour" lasts for 6 hours. We recommend hiking popular peaks like Reinebringen at 1:00 AM. You will have the mountain to yourself and the light is otherworldly.
Sleeping: All our vans come with blackout curtains. You can sleep in total darkness while the sun blazes outside.
Norway makes van life easy. The "Scenic Route" facilities are often architectural masterpieces.
• Design Toilets: Places like Ureddplassen (on Fv17) and Eggum have heated, modern facilities right in the wild.
• Hot Showers: Available at major beach campsites like Sandvikstranden (Bodø) and Skagen Camping (Flakstad).
• Emptying Stations: We provide a map of free greywater emptying stations along the E10. Keep the fjords clean!
The logistics of the Arctic can be tricky. Here is the boring (but vital) stuff to keep your trip smooth.
• Groceries: Stock up in Bodø at Rema 1000. Prices jump 20% once you hit the smaller islands.
• Alcohol: Buy wine at "Vinmonopolet" in Bodø before 6 PM (3 PM on Saturdays). Beer is sold in supermarkets until 8 PM (6 PM Sat).
• Water: Tap water is pristine. Fill up for free at gas stations (look for the "Vann" hose).
• Heater: Runs on diesel from the main tank. Keep fuel above 1/4 tank to ensure a warm night.
